A group of killer whales seen off the atoll of Tetiaroa
Wednesday, June 4th, 2008Rare in Polynesia, a group of six killer whales was observed earlier this week off Tetiaroa (former atoll Marlon Brando), between Tahiti and the atoll.
Observed by Pierre Follin (www.baleinomane.net) and Dr. Michael Poole ecology (May 27), during an outing to the atoll Tetiaora, “orcas have played like madmen, rolling under the hull of boat belly to the surface, each in turn”.
The last encounter with these cetaceans back to July 2005 in the Marquesas, Nuku Hiva, three killer whales were stranded in a bay and were rescued by the population Marquisiennes. Since no killer whale has been sighted in Nuku Hiva in the bay that the orcas were attending annually over the past decade.
Dr. Michael Poole will address this issue.
